In the Yoff Ndennapp section of Dakar, Senegal, located just outside the boundary of the international airport lies the home of the Siny Pap He Ndoye family. It is here, where Oumy Diene has prefected the craft of doll making. When a U.S. doll maker visited Dakar during the 1980s, a small group of women were taught to make small dolls from locally sourced fabrics and accessories. Oumy Diene was one of the most skilled at portraying the unique fashion of the Senegalese women as they dressed for special occasions in their most flattering clothes. These dolls, called Oumi Dolls, are each signed and dated and are sold mainly to European tourists . |
